Basic Information

  1. Sindh province consists of 23 districts, including Karachi. After Pakistan's independence on 14 August 1947, Karachi was the capital of Pakistan until 1962.
  2. Sindh is located in the south of Pakistan flanking the Indus river and the Thar desert which is bordered by the Arabian Sea, in the west by the Kirthar mountains and in the east by India.
  3. Sindh has Pakistan's second-largest economy, while its capital, Karachi, is Pakistan's largest city and financial center, which has the headquarters of several multinational banks. Sindh is home to most of Pakistan's industrial sectors and contains the Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah International Airport two International ports, Port Bin Qasim and Port of Karachi
  4. Sindh has an agriculture-based economy and produces fruits, consumer goods, and vegetables.
  5. Sindh is known for its culture, contemporary with the civilizations of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites - the Historical Monument at Makli, and the Archaeological Ruins at Mohenjodaro.
  6. Karachi was the capital of Pakistan from 1947 to 1958, before being transferred to Rawalpindi and then officially to Islamabad in 1967. Karachi is a port city of Pakistan, making it a major financial, business and industrial city in Pakistan.
  7. Sindh Province has 29 (twenty-nine) districts including Badin, Badu, Ghotki, Hyderabad, Jacobabad, Jamshoro, Karachi Central, Kashmore, Khairpur, Larkana, Matiari, Mirpur Khas, Naushahro Firoze, Shaheed Benazir Abad, Qambar Shahdadkot, Sanghar , Shikarpur, Sukkur, Tando Allahyar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tharparkar, Thatta, Umerkot, Sujawal, Karachi East, Karachi South, Karachi West, Korangi, Malir.
  8. Other cities in Sindh Province after Karachi are Hyderabad (the second-largest city in Sindh), Sukkur, Larkana, Nawabshah, Sehwan, Shikarpur, Mirpurkhas, and Thatta.

Government

  1. The government of Sindh Province is in a federal system with the Governor as the Regional Head who is elected by the Central government. Meanwhile, the Provincial Head of Government (Cabinet) is held by a Chief Minister (CM) who is elected by party representatives in Parliament.
  2. The Sindh Parliament has 168 seats. The Pakistan People's Party (PPP), chaired by Agha Siraj Khan Durrani, holds the majority with 99 seats, followed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) with 30 seats. The rest are held by Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM) with 9 seats, Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) with 14 seats, Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) with 3 seats, and Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan (JI) with 1 seat.
  3. The judicial element is held by a Chief Justice of the Sindh Province High Court (Sindh High Court).
